Guillamón: “Everything went perfectly and I’m very happy”

Hugo Guillamón has had a whirlwind week, despite the LaLiga season having come to a close. An international callup for the Under-21s turned into an appearance for the senior side, and in his debut he scored the opening goal against Lithuania.

The 21 year old checked in with VCF Media to talk about the occasion, still elated by the events of the previous night.

“Everything went perfectly last night. Any kid who plays football dreams of one day playing for the national team. I think that it's something that we all aspire to, from when we are little. I'm very happy, because all of the work that has been put in for so many years is worth it for moments like this,” he told VCF Media on Wednesday afternoon.

“We're happy. We wanted to have a good game. We didn't just want to go out there for its own sake -we wanted to win and give a good showing of ourselves.”

Guillamón’s debut could not have gone better, and his goal came as a shock even to him.

“I scored it very early on. I thought that it was going to drop by the penalty spot, I saw the space and I struck it into the net. I didn't know what to do. With how few goals I score, and it being with the national team, on my debut and after three minutes, I wasn't expecting it. It wasn't in my plans,” he recalls.

“With the youth level sides I've always had a lot of luck, because of the generation that we've had and the success that we've enjoyed at all of the tournaments we've participated in. It's also a reward for all of us, this chance to take an important step up.

“We want to send our support to those players who have tested positive for COVID-19. It’s a pity for them to miss Euro 2020. It’s an exceptional situation, but when we were told that it was going to count as a senior game, we were very excited. Several of us got to make our debuts, we had a good game and it was important for us.”

The centre back is a busy man as of late, with first team duties, international callups and also his university studies, which he keeps up alongside his professional career. The game against Lithuania meant that he had to change a maths exam set for Wednesday, which he will take at a later date.

“I'm studying Biomedical Engineering. I've always been a keen student and very dedicated to that, and I've not had any problem going through all of these courses,” he explains.

“It's a little more difficult now, because of how limited my time is, and how much I'm travelling. It's hard to keep up the same pace as my classmates, but it helps me to switch off. I think that it's important to have, even if I do it gradually.
 

Guillamón’s father, Chimo, also spoke to VCF Media to express his pride at his son’s achievements, and Hugo took the opportunity to thank his family for their constant backing.

“My family were able to go to the stadium in Madrid. They are always there with me, supporting me every step of the way. All this is dedicated to them.”
